Redfern Mail Exchange: from hands to machines
Description
Scope and contents
Postcodes are a four digit number, but they represent so much more. The introduction of postcodes was one of the sparking points for the legislation of worker’s and women’s rights, the equal pay act, union and protected industrial action, and the role of automation in the workplace.
The National Film and Sound Archive features three short films that were published in 1966 by the Post Master-General's Department. Australia Post - This is the Mail focuses on Redfern Mail Exchange and how the new cutting edge technology will change the way that mail is sorted and delivered. You can watch the clips here.
