Luke Kennedy
1989 - present
Luke Kennedy (AKA My name is LK) is the artist behind the iconic North Bondi 'Bondi' mural. His work has become synonymous with Bondi and been described as Bondi's answer to the Hollywood sign. Luke was born in Maroubra in 1989. He is a contemporary artist that draws on the influences of his life and those of youth subcultures, of surfing skating, and music. Luke's work explores graffiti/tagging art, specifically the removal of graffiti art. He uses bright, bold, colour and light aesthetics and cites his influences in the fields of expressionism and impressionism. As a lifeguard as well as competitive surfer in his 20’s, the ocean and nature are influences that resonate in his work. He studied at the Australian Catholic University (Bachelor of Art and Visual Design)and then the National Art School for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) before undertaking a Masters, he also won the Mark Henry Cain Memorial UK Travelling Scholarship. Kennedy’s work can be found on many different mediums, including canvas, surfboards, skateboards, stickers, signage, clothing and public murals. He won the commission from Waverley Council for the mural at North Bondi Pool, which he completed in the 2019. He installed the work between swims and surfs. Kennedy has been awarded several prizes in the past few years including the Waverley Mayor’s prize in 2021, Waverley Acrylic Prize 2021 and was a finalist in the 2021 Paddington Art Prize.
