Peter Halasz
1939 - present
Peter arrived in Bondi at 17 years of age. He was born in Hungary which was invaded by the Germans in 1944. During this period he lost his mother and grand parents, among others.
Under horrendous circumstances, the Jewish community were being deported to the camps of Auschwitz, he and his family hid for months. Peter left during the post war period in which Hungary experienced oppression and revolution between the Hunagrian state and the Soviet union. Peter was one of 14 000 Hungarian refugees who left for Australia. Arriving in Australia he sailed under the Harbour Bridge on arrival. He was living in Bondi within a month, managed to secure a job in a warehouse within a few days despite speaking no English.
Peter later became a clothes salesman, a partner in a small swimwear business and then, with his wife, commenced a small buisiness called Sea Folly. Sea Folly became a global brand. Bondi helped Peter reinvent himself and establish an internationally recognised swimwear brand.
