Sam Fiszman Memorial Park
2007 - present
Sam Fiszman Park is located at the southern tip of Ben Buckler in North Bondi and is an awe-inspiring coastal landscape that pays homage to the remarkable life of Sam Fiszman. This park, brought to life by architectural firms 360 Degrees and McGregor Westlake Architects, stands as a testament to the enduring contributions of asylum-seekers within Australian communities.
Sam Fiszman, a Polish-Jewish refugee, arrived in Australia in 1948 with his wife Esther, seeking refuge from post-war Europe. Settling in Bondi, Sam quickly embraced the local community and immersed himself in the vibrant beach culture. From playing a vital role in the Hakoah Soccer team to serving as president of the North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club, Sam became a beloved figure.
Professionally, Sam built his own successful carpet empire, Univers Carpets, and made significant contributions to promoting tourism through sports as the chair of the NSW Tourism Commission and Tourism Australia. He played a pivotal role in bringing the 2003 Rugby World Cup to Australia and securing Sydney as the host city for the 2002 Gay Games. Sam's dedication to philanthropy extended to various charitable organizations, and he was a lifelong supporter and dedicated fundraiser for the Australian Labor Party.
Sam Fiszman Park reflects Waverley Council's vision of transforming spaces into meaningful places. The park capitalizes on the natural beauty of Ben Buckler headland, with its ancient sandstone platforms and dramatic cliffs that offer breathtaking views of Bondi and the ocean. Two striking cobalt blue concrete balconies, with their jagged edges, provide an immersive experience, actively directing visitors' gaze towards the iconic beach, majestic cliffs, and boundless ocean.
Sam Fiszman Park invites visitors to reflect on the shared experiences of all those who seek refuge and new opportunities. The park serves as a reminder of the resilience and unyielding spirit that unites us as a community, and the lasting contributions made by individuals like Sam Fiszman.
