Miriam Guttman-Jones
1950 - present
Miriam was born in Beit Shean, Israel. Since migrating to Australia at the age of five. Miriam has always lived in Waverley’s Hunter Ward, she attended Bondi Beach Public School and then went to Dover Heights Girls High, now known as Rose Bay Secondary College. Upon graduating, Miriam pursued nursing and was Director of Nursing for 22 years including working at a specialty endoscopy clinic in Bondi Junction.
Inspired by her strong connection to the Hunter Ward, Miriam ran for Council in 2008. She was the only independant elected during her time on Council. During this time she served as Deputy Mayor from 2010-2011.
Miriam was the Instigator of ‘Eat, Pray, Naches’, to document the post-war Jewish migration to Sydney. “I thought it was necessary that we document the story of the post-war Jewish migration to Waverley; Waverley really changed over the years because of this migration.” Born in Israel, arrived in Australia aged 5. My mother was one of six siblings and was the only survivor. My father was one of eight siblings, and just he and a brother survived. My parents were married at the start of the war and they had a daughter during the war, who was shot at 18 months.”
During her time on council, she was passionate about better rubbish removal services, parking improvements and instigated public exhibitions honoring local communities and post-war migration to the area. Miriam stood up for greater transparency and accountability in council.
