Steve Moneghetti
1962 - present
Stephen ‘Steve’ James Moneghetti was born on September 26, 1962, in Ballarat, Victoria. Although not considered to be a good runner in primary school, Moneghetti developed into an excellent endurance athlete by high school and competed in track events and cross country.
4 x Commonwealth Games between 1986 and 1998 (Marathons & 10,000m races). Won gold in marathon at 1994 Victoria Games, Canada; silver at 1990 Auckland Games; bronze at 1986 Edinburgh Games. Won bronze in 10,000km at 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games. 4 x Olympic Games between 1988 and 2000 (Marathons). 5th at 1988 Seoul; 7th at 1996 Atlanta; 10th at 2000 Sydney.
Moneghetti was at his peak when he won the 1990 Berlin Marathon in his personal best time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 16 seconds. He also won the 1994 Tokyo Marathon and the Bronze in marathon at 1997 World Championships in Athens.
Moneghetti was a regular participant in Sydney’s City to Surf (also known as City2Surf), a popular road race and fun run covering a 14km course from Hyde Park in the city centre to world-famous Bondi Beach. He won the race four years in a row consecutively from 1988-91, becoming the only male to have achieved the feat four times in a row. In the 1991 event which attracted 38,585 starters, Moneghetti clocked a time of 40 minutes, 2.46 seconds, eclipsing the then course record set by Robert de Castella in 1981 (40:08). Moneghetti’s long-standing City to Surf record remains unbroken to this day.
Moneghetti represented Australia for the final time in the marathon at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finishing 10th in the time of 2:14:50. After his retirement from competitive running, Moneghetti continued to race in events such as the City to Surf, and Sydney and Melbourne Marathons on an infrequent basis.
In 2014, Moneghetti was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia medal (AM) for his significant service to athletics as a marathon runner, administrator and mentor to young athletes. He was also inducted into the Australian Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2021.
