Pathways to the Pavilion
2023 - 2024
'Let’s Go to the Pavilion’ is the song created by students of Wairoa School in 2023 and 2024. The song describes walking to Bondi Pavilion from Wairoa School, from crossing the road safely, to having a snack in the courtyard and watching the beach from the balcony. Based in Waverley, Wairoa School is a NSW Department of Education school with 72 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who live with moderate to severe disability.
The song was created under the School’s Pathways to the Pavilion Program which has used music to create a bridge between the school’s students and the Bondi Pavilion. A cohort of students with a passion for music created original scripts and melodies about going to the Pavilion to learn, and having fun. Their work has been rehearsed and recorded at the Pavilion recording studio, and incorporated into lesson plans for the whole school.
The Pathways to the Pavilion Program was made possible with a grant from Waverley Council. The song was performed before a full house in the Bondi Pavilion Theatre on 20 June 2024. Mayor Paula Masselos welcomed everyone to the Theatre, and said:
“Community is at the heart of what we do at Waverley Council. Our priority is to create a strong, connected, resilient community that offers everyone opportunities for to come together, feel safe, and truly belong. I am immensely proud that this Pavilion stands at the heart of our community, and even prouder of the accomplishments of this extraordinary school and the students, teachers, and families we have here today."
