Esso Jazz Summit
1986
A relaxed mood kicked off a swinging musical afternoon at the Bondi Pavilion Esso Jazz Summit in 1986, when a young crowd of beachgoers enjoyed performances of all jazz styles, from traditional to modern and experimental.
Big bands and soloists, jams and improvisations, captivated the appreciative audience. As the sun set the atmosphere ignited with a fascinating mix of standards and originals.
A double stage placed in front of the Pavillion ensured continuous performances into the evening. Although 13 bands were programmed, only 10 had played before a torrential rainstorm ended the event.
Performers included Don Burrows Quintet, Sandy Evans Trio, Southern Cross Jazz Quartet, Andy Sugg and Andy Vance Duo, Dave Dallwitz Sydney Big Band, Allan Browne Band, Merve Acheson and the Mainstreamers, Jazzmanian Quartet, Rick Price Quartet and NSW Conservatorium Big Band.
ABC TV filmed the event on February 22 for the Don Burrows Collection series. The live double album recording earned a nomination for best jazz album at the inaugural ARIA Awards.
Esso, TAA, Waverley Council and 2UW sponsored the event.
