Tsunami closes Bondi Beach
Description
Scope and contents
2007
On the 1st of April 2007 Bondi Beach, as well as nearby Tamarama, Coogee and Bronte were closed due to a Tsunami warning. An earthquake in the Solomon Islands triggered the alert and closed the beach. The alert was later cancelled after a sea rise of 10cm was recorded along the NSW coast. Sydney was on high alert for the event with a school in Manly evacuated and ferry services suspended. The event was later dubbed 'the tsunami that wasn't' by Waverley Mayor of the time George Newhouse. A similar event took place in 2022 with Bondi Beach closed for 6 hours after a volcanic eruption in Tonga.
