Dion Horstmans
1967 - 2025
Bondi based Dion Horstmans describes himself as an Artist, sculptor, maker and do-er. Living only 200 metres from the beach he can regularly be seen training before sunrise on the beach.
Dion grew up in New Zealand and the Cook Islands before moving to Australia as a young adult. Prior to becoming a sculptor, Horstmans worked for over a decade in the film industry creating props, models and large scale works with industrial materials for Matrix, Superman, Star Wars and other big blockbuster productions. Through this unorthodox education he enhanced his great inventiveness and ability to problem-solving.
Dion's work explores space and volume, a language he masters, achieving flawless exactitude without having to rely on digital processes. His geometric steel sculptures are often linear in form, geometric structures playing with line and shadow. The lines and forms in his pieces are inspired by Maori and Polynesians patterns with broader influences including science and ecological forms influencing some of his designs.
Horstmans has taken part in many successful solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney (including Vivid, Sculpture by the Sea, Artisans by the Park, Sydney Botanical Gardens and several curated shows at the Casula Powerhouse), Denmark (Aarhus Kunstmuseum) and Asia. His public and private art commissions have been featured in publications like Vogue Living, Harper’s Bazaar and The Age. He is also responsible for the large scale public artwork 'voltage' on the ceiling of the Adina in Bondi.
