Barracluff's Ostrich Farm
Description
History
Founded in 1889 by Joseph and Jane Barracluff, Barracluff's Ostrich Farm in Waverley was an early Australian hub for ostrich feather production. With origins from South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt, the farm's hybrid strains attracted attention, including a visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Boasting around 100 ostriches by 1902, the farm thrived until Joseph's death in 1918. Notably, Joseph served as Waverley Council Alderman and Mayor from 1914 to 1916. Despite the farm's "Under Royal Patronage" status, it closed in 1918 after Joseph's death. The land was subdivided and sold in 1925.
