War Memorial Hospital
Description
History
The War Memorial Hospital began its life as a stunning Victorian mansion originally owned by Ebenezer Vickery. Standing at 125 Birrell St, Waverley this historic gem was built in the 1880s and was formerly known as ‘Edina’.
Vickery spared no expense, importing Italian marble and lavish furnishings. The mansion featured a central tower and details like etched glass, marble fireplaces, and stained-glass windows. The lush garden combined formal and natural styles including a ‘wildwood’ that added to its charm.
After Vickery’s death in 1906, the remaining family donated the grounds and estate to the Methodist Church in 1919. Transformed into a hospital in 1921, a chapel was added in 1932.
