Variant titleA Waverley Library Local History FactsheetAuthor/CreatorWaverley LibraryContentsIn 1854 the Waverley Hotel in Bondi Junction became the scene of a gruesome murder when publican John Davis was brutally killed. His nephew, Joseph Roberts, an early suspect, fled but was later found and put on trial. Despite circumstantial evidence, he was acquitted.
Roberts is suspected to have become the infamous bushranger "Johnny Gilbert," who rode with Ben Hall and Frank Gardiner. Gilbert met his end in a police shootout in 1865, leaving behind a perplexing tale of crime, escape, and mystery.
